Scientific meaning of Adhika Maas

The significance or glories of puroshottama maas is still unknown to many and so it still stands in darkness as it comes after every 32 months. “Sri surya siddhanta ” explains that there are 1,593,336 extra months on 51,840,000 solar months in one mahayug. Hence there comes one extra months after every 32 months. 16 days and 4 hours of solar calendar. Thus, one lunar year lags behind the solar year and one adhika maas had to be added after every three years to align the lunar year and solar year. As the foundation of our calendar is based on the phases of the moon, the transits takes 354 days and eight hours, 34.28 seconds. It brings a difference of 10 days, 21 hours, 44 minutes and 2.865 seconds, so an adhika maas is added which carries the name of the previous or the next month’s depending upon the proximity of the month.
